The new power station got the A-OK from the city this week. According to city council, adding new power generation is needed to maintain local supply and account for future growth. Council voted unanimously in favour of the plan, but first the City needs to pass a bylaw to borrow the money for the project, which would will be heard in August. The $66-million generator will be located in the Box Springs area, and would see an additional 43 megawatts of generation capacity added to the city’s grid. Utility officials predict power requirements to grow between 1.5 and 2 per cent each year, meaning an additional 2 to 3 megawatts would be needed each year.
