A pilot project is hitting the streets in Medicine Hat aimed at helping both police and those in experiencing a mental crisis. Medicine Hat Police have partnered with REDI Enterprises to provide improved and coordinated response to individuals in mental crisis and for those with complex support needs, who have come into contact with law enforcement. An employee of REDI will be embedded within the MHPS, to coordinate the response activities between the various community agencies.
The goal will be to reduce rates of criminalization, detention and hospitalization for these individuals The pilot project is for a one year period and the two agencies will meet regularly to assess the program and make recommendations for improvements and to measure the success of the initiative.
