Candidates for the new Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner riding took part in an election forum. Last night at Medicine Hat College the forum was somewhat more heated than the first polite debate, especially when it came to running a federal deficit. Liberal Glen Allan defended his party’s proposal to run deficits while investing heavily in infrastructure, saying Canada is able to service the debt. Conservative Jim Hillyer said his party will not be increasing the deficit, and stressed the importance of a balanced budget. Erin Weir says the NDP platform is proposing a balanced budget, without cuts to essential services. She says the NDP would increase corporate taxes to prevent cuts. Brent Smith of the Green Party disagrees with a Federal deficit, saying it’s unfair for future generations to bear the burden of the debt.
