An increase in the number of gastrointestinal illnesses being reported across the South Zone has prompted Alberta Health Services to remind residents about hygiene. Gastrointestinal illness is common year-round although it is more likely to occur in fall and winter. Individuals can be exposed to illness through swimming, food prepared by anyone with poor hand hygiene, improperly handled or cooked foods, or exposure to other ill individuals. Officials say that proper washing of hands and cleaning of food preparation areas is important in helping to avoid getting sick.
